Lighthouses

I love a lighthouse. Here are some of my favourites, going round the coast.

Alum Bay · Wight, day 4, Sun, 23 Apr 2023, 2.2 miles in

It took a while to get here from where I'd camped. When I finally caught sight of the Needles and the lighthouse right at the end of the chalk ridge, I was amazed by how small it was! I'd expected it to be as tall as the hill I was standing on.

I'd not long set off from a camp spot where I could see this beauty all night, taking its light-flashing duty very seriously indeed. No sound out here but the waves and the birds.

  3. Photo at Plymouth

Plymouth · The Other Half of the Path, day 6, Tue, 6 May 2025, 1.8 miles in

This one used to stand out on the Eddystone rocks, miles off Plymouth. Then they took it apart, lugged it back to shore and rebuilt it on the Hoe. It seems a lot of effort for the modest entry fee to climb it.

The first time I saw this, I was overjoyed - I had thought Mevagissey was a lot further away. It sits on the end of the outer harbour wall.

  5. Photo at The Lizard

The Lizard · The Other Half of the Path, day 2, Fri, 2 May 2025, 12.9 miles in

Lighthouse, cottages and foghorns, a stone's throw from the most southerly point of mainland Britain. What more could you want?!

  6. Photo at Pendeen

    Pendeen, Cornwall
Pendeen · Half the Path, day 7, Sun, 12 Sept 2021, 14.8 miles in

I love this one. It's miles from anywhere, out on the far west of Cornwall's north coast, and if you're coming from St Ives, it means the end of a really tough stretch of walking and the beginning of my favourite stretch of coast.

  7. Photo at Hartland Point

    Hartland Point, Devon
    Hartland Point · Ultramara…, day 1, Fri, 4 Oct 2024, 2.7 miles in

Less than an hour into the North Coast 110. The Romans called the headland 'The Promontory of Hercules', and it's where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic, so it gets a proper battering.

  8. Photo at Mortehoe

Mortehoe · Half the Path, day 2, Mon, 6 Sept 2021, 18.0 miles in

There was so much sea mist that I almost couldn't see it until I was on top of it. Heading west, it marks the end of a tough stretch of coast. Coming the other way, especially at night, it's a lone beacon warning you what's coming.
