Views worth stopping for

  1. Photo at Atherfield
    1
    Atherfield, Isle of Wight
    Atherfield · Wight, day 3, Sat, 22 Apr 2023, 18.1 miles in

The Back of the Wight is falling into the sea, a bit at a time. This crack will be a landslip one day, so I didn't hang about! This soft coast is also one of the best places in Europe for dinosaur fossils.

  2. Photo at Blackgang
    2
    Gore Cliff, Isle of Wight
    Blackgang · Wight, day 3, Sat, 22 Apr 2023, 14.5 miles in

Layer-cake cliffs above Blackgang. The land round here has been slipping for centuries, and the Blackgang Chine theme park below has had to move its rides back more than once.

  3. Photo at Durdle Door

    Durdle Door, Dorset
Durdle Door · The Land of Stones and Bones, day 1, Sat, 18 Oct 2025, 16.1 miles in

Yet another photo of Durdle Door! I've passed this location so many times, and seem to have to take a photo every time. It is a beautiful place though, especially when it's not full of tourists.

  4. Photo at Scorriton
    4
    The edge of Dartmoor, Devon
Scorriton · Devon Coast to Coast, day 1, Sat, 18 Apr 2026, 26.7 miles in

The Two Moors Way above Scorriton, with the moor behind me and the green patchwork of South Devon spread out ahead. The sun was out for a good chunk of the day, which was lovely. Everything hurt by then, which wasn't.

  5. Photo at Salcombe
    5
    Sharp Tor, Devon
Salcombe · The Other Half of the Path, day 7, Wed, 7 May 2025, 22.0 miles in

The path squeezes round the rocks of Sharp Tor, just outside Salcombe, with nothing between you and the sea. It looks like something out of a Harry Potter film.

  6. Photo at Wembury
    6
    The Yealm Estuary, Devon
Wembury · The Other Half of the Path, day 6, Tue, 6 May 2025, 14.8 miles in

When I reached this, I thought it was the most beautiful place I'd ever seen. It was so peaceful, just looking down on the water and the boats, across to Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo.

  7. Photo at Cape Cornwall
    7
    Cape Cornwall
Cape Cornwall · Half the Path, day 7, Sun, 12 Sept 2021, 18.0 miles in

Part way along my favourite stretch of coast, Cape Cornwall is England's only cape. The chimney on top is from an old tin mine, and Heinz bought the whole headland for the nation in 1987. There's even a stone carved plaque shaped like a baked bean tin label to prove it.

  8. Photo at Boscastle
    8
    Boscastle, Cornwall
Boscastle · Half the Path, day 4, Thu, 9 Sept 2021, 15.9 miles in

Boscastle's harbour from above, tucked into a twisty inlet that keeps the Atlantic out. The white tower on Willapark headland was built in the 1820s as a local merchant's summer house, then spent a century as a coastguard lookout watching for smugglers.

  9. Photo at Combe Martin
    9
    Great Hangman, Devon
Combe Martin · Half the Path, day 2, Mon, 6 Sept 2021, 3.3 miles in

Heading up Great Hangman, the highest sea cliff in England and the highest point on the whole South West Coast Path, with the mist still sitting in the valleys. A few years later on the North Coast 110, the descent from here was my lowest moment.

  10. Photo at Lynmouth
    10
    Valley of Rocks, Devon
Lynmouth · Half the Path, day 1, Sun, 5 Sept 2021, 22.9 miles in

Valley of Rocks, near Lynton, with Castle Rock on the left and my friend Chris, who walked a chunk of Half the Path with me, getting his own shot. It's home to a herd of wild goats who couldn't care less about walkers.
